If you think you’re too old, too young, too single, too scared, too wise, too tired, or too busy for the blessing of serving in RMCC’s Kids Church ministry, keep reading.
Kids Church servants must be:
Diverse shapes and spiritual sizes are welcome.
So, what does a Kids Church servant do? Some teach, some directly assist teachers, and some serve on the perimeter, like Danny and Bev Krahn. There are roles like hall parents, check-in, music, sound, buddy ministry, special events, special projects, and kids clubs. Currently, more than 100 people serve in RMCC’s Kids Church ministry.
The Krahns are “craft creators” in Kids Church ministry. Danny is “the builder guy”, and Bev is his assistant. Their projects are usually for special occasions or Day Camp. Over the years, in his woodshop at home, Danny has cut out kits for wagons, sailboats, tools, and, most recently, toy trains. Bev puts the kits together along with how-to instructions.
Their Kids Church careers began about 15 years ago with a request.
“One instructor asked if I could build little sailboats for a Kids Club, to race in an eavestrough,” Danny recalls. “When I saw what it did— the joy of the children in something created for them, that they could touch and play with —it was motivational for me.”
The Krahns’ gift to the children took many hours to produce, over days and weeks, but they were well-rewarded when they saw the effects transfer to the Kids Church children.
Bev recalls, “This year, on the last day, they got to take their toy trains home. It was incredible to hear the joy as they were telling their parents. They were so excited to have something big and solid. Our reward is watching the children grow and the excitement on their faces. When they come in, they’re just buzzing, always so excited to be there.”
Danny adds, “I’m not a teacher, but the tools God’s given us—in our hands and in our minds—bring joy to the children and help them grow in the Lord. Until I can’t work my hands, I guess I’ll keep doing it [Kids Church ministry] for Him.”
At the same time, more Kids Church helpers could have been useful. Recalling just one tidbit of the train kit project, Bev says, “This year for Day Camp, it took me about 2.5 hours to just write each child’s name on their bandannas.”
They could use help, but they love what they do.
Bev says, “It’s amazing to see the number of children in Kids Church, and we have lots of newborns. I don’t see the need for servants slowing down.”
She’s right. The Kids Church program is for children in Nursery through Grade 6. Most kids in Kids Church are veterans, but some are newcomers, and some will be new in faith, saved this past July when a record 160 attended our week of SCUBA Day Camp!
In the fall, we will have more than 100 kids attending each service.
It is a true blessing to serve in this vital ministry and see kids grow in their faith and walk with Jesus. If you feel God is speaking and stirring your heart to serve, we’d love to talk to you. Please contact Kids Ministry Pastor Hugh Morrow at hugh@calvarychapel.ca or our Kids Ministry Director Lana Morrow at lana@calvarychapel.ca.
Every year, Kids Church kicks off with training for all servants. We’d also love to invite you to our workshop. Attend the Exhort, Equip, Exchange – E3 Kids Ministry Training and Lunch happening Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Kids Church classes start the following week. Attendance for training is free but please sign up on Church Centre. We hope you can join us!
