The energy, enthusiasm, and genuineness of youth are inspiring. Amen?
God uniquely equips our teens to minister to our RMCC family, and Anna Cheung is one such servant, faithfully ministering in our Kids Church ministry. When asked about her experience, she shared this beautiful testimony of the call to serve, the benefit of her youth as a Kids Church servant, and the blessing of relationships.
Anna writes:
My family has served at the church for many years, and serving in Kids Church was a guarantee for me when I finished Grade 6.
One of my first times serving in the kindergarten classroom, something a teacher said in the pre-service meeting really stuck with me. They said we need teachers and assistants to help the kids, of course, but it’s a lot of responsibility. First of all, you need to keep the kids safe, so they keep coming to class comfortably. But teaching kids adds a bigger load on your shoulders spiritually. We are given a special task—to help the kids get to know their Lord and Savior. I needed to learn to effectively teach the messages we were given, so when they get older their relationship with Jesus is strong.
Honestly, this really stuck with me because I was pretty scared when I first started serving. But the more years I serve, the more I feel relaxed and confident. Sometimes, dealing with little kids’ antics can drive you mad, but their innocence often makes relationship-building easier. Of course, I still feel the responsibility of what I’m helping to teach, but I can also become friends with the kids. Sometimes, the current kids in kindergarten or even the older kids I taught who still like to catch up will talk to me in the halls.
When I started serving, there were tons of youth helping out with Kids Church, and there still are. But I’ve also heard from some youth who want to get involved in the church, and Kids Church is a great way to start. Being a younger person is helpful because we can understand some of the references the kids use.
I started helping in the kindergarten class about three years ago. I am also a crew leader at Day Camp, specifically for those ages going into Grade 1 or 2, and some of the benefits still surprise me—like how parents of kids recognize me or meeting a younger sibling of a kid I taught and knowing more about their life. At Day Camp, I get to serve kids I just taught earlier in the year, so some of the relationships you build have already started.
Serving in Kids Church has been such a blessing, and I hope to work with kids for most of my life, Lord willing.
Sharing the love of Jesus with the kids at RMCC is a privilege and a powerful ministry—even for young people.
