Proverbs 24

Verses 5-6. Strength is not body building. That is not what God is talking about here. A person is wise, he is strong because of the knowledge he has of the Lord and how he applies that knowledge to his life. David did not defeat the giant Goliath in the power of his own strength, but I am told in I Samuel 17:45-47, “Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” It wasn’t about David’s strength, his might, his power, but the Lord’s working through him to defeat this enemy! What is interesting today is that I can sometimes attempt to fight these spiritual battles in the power of my strength and I am not winning. I need to come to the Lord, seek Him, be in His Word and listen to the counsel of the men and women of the Scriptures for they can teach us many things as Paul reminds us in Romans 15:4, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” Hebrews chapter 11 speaks of the men and women of faith and how they can teach me lessons of faith, how they can help get my eyes focused back upon the One who can help, the Lord! And not only do I see wise counsel from the Scriptures; I can also receive it from my brothers and sisters in the Lord. I am to seek godly wisdom before I rush into a battle. That would just be foolish if I didn’t!
