Did Nazareth Exist?

Was Jesus an actual historical person?

Every year there is an ongoing debate in both the secular community and religious circles regarding the historicity of Jesus. I enjoy following these debates because the eventual outcome is so fascinating. In 2008 a book was published titled “The Myth of Nazareth: The invented town of Jesus” which seeks to prove that the town of Nazareth during Jesus’ time never existed and, therefore, how could He?

The book uses a combination of archaeological arguments, scientific arguments, and criticisms of current evidence to make a compelling case that appears to be well thought out until you hear the counter-argument, which uses better archaeological and scientific evidence and is my favourite part of this story.

I can’t cover all of the counter-arguments, but here are some brief highlights:

  • Archeologist Yardena Alexandre explains1 that the age range of the coins found in the area in fact places Jesus’ Nazareth in the correct time frame.
  • The pottery remains found in the area indicated that the people inhabiting Nazareth had little wealth and were dated 100 BCE to 100 CE – within the days of Jesus.
  • The best evidence, which was found one year after the publishing of the book, was the first discovery of a Jesus-era house in Nazareth complete with a water system and partial walls2.

The summary of the data shows that Nazareth was a small hamlet of approximately 50 houses of little wealth that existed during the time of Jesus.  The fun part is that all these details were already written in the Bible, but the scientific and archaeological evidence just needed to “catch up.”
